Sony Ericsson C903 Review

On July - 28 - 2009

The recently released Sony Ericsson C903 is a stunning addition to the Sony Ericsson Cyber-shots cameraphone lineup. It is a mid-range handset with some excellent plus points.  Actually, the Sony Ericsson C903 was inspired by the Sony T-series point-and-shoot digcams, thus you will expected an excellent camera in this handset. However, the SE C903 might be the last Cyber-Shots cameraphone because the company is planning to phase out the distinction between its Cyber-Shot and Walkman brands that announced lately.

Design

The Sony Ericsson C903 is a compact device in slider form factor. It measures 97 x 49 x 16 mm and weighs 96 grams and it fits comfortably into any pocket and is lightweight enough to not even be noticed. The 2.4″ QVGA display dominates the front panel. Though, it is standard VGA resolution of 240×320 pixels, but the screen look beautifully sharp and clear, and very good legibility under bright sunlight . Below the screen you’ll find a square D-pad and six neatly arranged buttons for call start and stop, shortcuts, cancel and two soft keys. All these keys are large enough to hit accurately. Sliding the phone up reveals the flatbed alphanumeric keyboard. They are made from a single sheet of plastic with augmented grooves to differentiate the keys make the typing is quick and easy. Despite the good looking of the device but ergonomics are also fine.

Camera

Since SE C903 is only mid-range cameraphone, so it spot a 5MP camera instead of 8MP, but it doesn’t mean it is not a decent camera. The  camera capable of producing images with a maximum resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels and  come with a LED flash. Features rich is another jump of the camera, it offers a wide range of niceties such as smile shutter, face detection, image and video stabilizer, BestPic, auto-rotate, macro mode, spot metering, camera images geo-tagging, etc for you to play along with. Image quality is excellent, images has accurate colors and n nicely sharp edges. And when the camera is switch to capturing video, it is able to record video in QVGA resolution at 30fps. The video is in mp4 format so it can be directly watched at any mp4 player. The camera also has a reasonably quick response. Overall, the 5MP camera in C903 is somehow better than some other higher resolution camera.

Music, FM Rasio, Video and TV

Music player in C903 is version 3 which is a slightly abridged edition of Walkman player 3.0 but AAC+, AMR, MP3, WMA and WAV formats are all supported. The music player itself has a five-band graphic equalizer with five presets. The quality is not up to Sony Ericsson’s Walkman quality but still acceptable. Unfortunately, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack in this phone. For radio lover, there is an integrated FM radio that have memory for 20 stations and supports RDS as well as the TrackID service, which identifies mystery tunes.

The video player has a simple and easy interface. It support fast-forwarding and rewinding when watching the movie. The video section also houses the pre-installed YouTube client. It gives you full access to clips and uploading, bookmarked favorites and so on.

If the screen on the phone is too small for you, there still has provides a TV out slot to allow the respective images to be viewed on a television – though you will need to buy a cable to take advantage.

Connectivity and GPS

GSM/GPRS/EDGE is supported in this handset. If you wish to use faster 3G internet speed, the phone HSDPA and HSUPA are also supported. However, there is no WiFi in this phone. There is a built-in GPS receiver in this phone so you can use it for navigation. The Wayfinder navigator 7 software is pre-installed but turn-by-turn navigation is only offered on trial for a limited time and then after that you must pay a monthly subscription.

Final Words

Generally, we are satisfied the features in Sony Ericsson C903. Of coarse, there are some minor drawback in this phone like lack of WiFi and 3.5mm jack, but those are not the must for everybody. After all, the SE C903  still an excellent phone.
