LG GM750 Review

On November - 10 - 2009

LG GM750, is one of the company earliest smartphone that running on WinMo 6.5 OS. This smartphone is said to be the successor for the LG GM730. Consider the GM730 didn’t give so much surprise for us, so we hope that GM750 will giving us better impression. At a glance, they both seem has no much differences on the specs, would GM750 be another disappointment? Let’s check it out.

Design

The design of LG GM750 is similar with GM730, which is also a typical touchscreen phone design – a large screen and some buttons below it. The display is a 3.0 inch TFT resistive touch screen which displays up to 256,000 colors at a pixel resolution 240 x 400 pixels. The quality is quite good actually, color is vivid and image is clear on the display plus it is sharp, responsive and intuitive too, though it is only TFT screen. Below the screen located the touch-sensitive send, end keys and D-pad which is use to confirm selection. Besides the D-pad also optical sensitive, so it can be use as a mouse cursor too.  The overall size of GM750 is measures 109.8 x 53.5 x 12.9 mm, it is not a small device but feel comfy hold in hand. Despite the body is made of plastic, the device still solid and compact.

User Interface

The LG GM750 is running on Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional OS. It is the latest version that just released not long ago. Although it is a WinMo device but LG has successfully disguise it with their S-CLASS 3D interface. Like most of the interface, S-calss also strong at personalization, which is let you customize widgets and shortcut on the UI. In LG GM750, the interface features 5 pages homescreen instead of the old 4 pages. However, the 3D cube navigation missing here, but you still can switch between pages by sliding a finger against the display or optical pad. Also you will see ten shortcuts at the bottom of the screen (include the menu shortcut), which will display 5 of them at a time and you can slide a finger for select rest of shortcuts. The keyboard interface also very interesting. It can display Qwerty keypad on both vertical and horizontally depend on your favorite position. If you are not familiar with Qwerty keypad, you still can use the typical numeric keypad interface or even using the handwriting recognition feature.

Camera

Camera included in GM750 is still have 5-megapixel resolution features digital zoom, autofocus and can capture the pictures up to 2592×1944 pixels. Unfortunately there is no flash included. Picture’s quality is pretty nice, only under bright condition though. The camera also provides video recording and playback capabilities but maximum resolution is WQVGA, which is quite a letdown for today standard. Apart of that, there is also a video camera on the front panel, so video call is allowed too.

Music and Video

Music player on this phone has no different on other phones that running S-CLASS 3D UI. Likewise it support most of the music format such as MP3, WAV, WMA & eAAC+ files. This phone comes with a standard microUSB port not the 3.5mm jack for headphone. So it is hard to find an alternative headset. Video format that support by the phone including MP4,H.263,H.264 and WMV. However, the player dose not support DivX and Xvid files. So you will need a third party application to playback these file if you wish to watch on better quality video.

Final Words

As comparison, the LG GM750 indeed is better than it successor, GM730. But if it is compare with other WinMo 6.5 phone, such as Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO or HTC HD2 , there is no noticeable breakthrough. Also the lack of social network friendly feature make it hard to attract young generation, considering it is the hottest event now.  In a nutshell, the phone is nice and cool but not interesting enough. It is lack of features that make it standing out more.
