On November - 8 - 2009

Google Android powered smartphone isn’t something new. It already have many of Android powered smartphone on the market ever since it is first applied in HTC G1 last year. However, the former mobile phone manufacturer giant Motorola have not catch up the trend like other manufacturers. But the rumor of the company producing Android phone never ended until the company finally announced the Motorola Cliq. Yes, it is the first Android phone from Motorola. Now it has been released to the market, Motorola Morrison or Motorola Dext MB200 would be it name if it is outside United state. We all know that Motorola have silent for a while, would this device help to resurrect the company?  Well It is hard to say, we are not so positive about it, after all the mobile phone industry is very competitive. So instead of predicting the future of the company, why don’t we just check out Motorola Cliq first? Shall we?

Design

Just like most of the Android device, Motorola Dext spots a side slider design. On the front panel there is a 3.1 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen of 320 x 480 pixels resolution. The screen not only displaying beautiful images but also very responsive. Below the display there are three normal front panel buttons: the home, menu and back which is usually seen on other phone. Open the slider unveiled the Qwerty keyboard. It is a four line keypad with a D-pad on the left. The keys are relatively large and really easy to press, no miss-pressing encountered on the test.  So far everything look so good for Motorola Dext in term of design, but when it come with the size, it screw up. The device measure 114 x 58 x 15.6 mm and the weight of 163g, which is device that certainly difficult to fit in your jean’s pocket. To be honest, the Dext indeed feel bulky. However, the phone has a very good built quality, at least it does feel solid.

User Interface

The DEXT runs Android version 1.5 not the recent release v1.6. So you will see usual drag-down status/notification bar is at the top of the screen and the pull-up main menu at the bottom. It can do everything other Android phones can, including downloading OTA Amazon MP3s and accessing all the apps in the Marketplace. However there is tweak on the homescreen, which allow for five rather than the traditional three homescreen panes and also there are up and running widgets spewing information about your friend’s statuses from Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. Other than that, there is nothing special have to mention, except the MotoBlur.

MotoBlur

Actually MOTOBLUR is Motorola’s version of Palm’s Synergy. It is a application that memorizes all of your email and social networking accounts, keeps them linked together, and lets you communicate in a blended way across services. MOTOBLUR not just allow to quick access to social networking site, it also can use to push status updates to one or all of your social networks. Type in a new update or tweet and you can choose to send it solely through Facebook, Twitter or MySpace, or to all of them simultaneously. You have to set up MotoBlur at the first time you start the phone. It will prompt you to register your various e-mail account and social media profiles. Overall, it is very good application for social network and texting addict.

Music and Video

The music player in Motorola Dext is typical seen on standard for Android phones. The interface is simple and easy to navigate and you can view your Album Art for all your music. The player supports several file formats such as MP3/eAAC+/WAV/WMA9. In the player option, there are album art, playlists, shuffle, repeat, and an airplane mode for in-flight media use. The music quality is pretty decent through the speakerphone. If you still not satisfy with it, you can still use your favorite headset that can connect through 3.5 mm audio jack on the top of the phone.

Video file can be watched through Video Gallery which are arranges in a thumbnail grid. One cool thing about the video player is you can edit the video for your personal suite, such as you can crop the footage, delete audio or take a still from a video frame. You may found this useless, but if you want to upload to YouTube, than it is very useful. That’s why you can tag video as well. The video quality is rather average, but the 3.1-inch screen does help in watching a video.

Other Features

Motorola Dext features 5 Mega Pixel camera embedded with 25892×1944 Pixels enabled with Auto focus and geotagging. The picture quality was pretty good. Other features also include 802.11b Wi-Fi, USB mass storage, Google voice search, Google Talk, instant messaging, visual voice mail, stereo Bluetooth, PC syncing, and speaker-independent voice dialing,Digital compass and GPS navigation system. All these make the Dext a really feature rich and wise handset.

Final Words

Motorola really surprise us with this Motorola Dext MB220. Consider the lately ailing performance on the company, we really didn’t expect high on this phone. But the result was impressed us. Motorola Dext has very rich and comprehensive features. The MotoBlur feature really a good news for those social network addict. But it doesn’t mean Dext has no disadvantages, apparently the size is one of it. The phone sometime also suffered by sluggish response. Nevertheless, if you looking a social network friendly device, Dext probably can fit your need.
