Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Review

Although Nokia entered the touchscreen market very late, but it has succeeded with it first touchscreen device (Nokia 5800 XpressMusic). However, one touchscreen device is not enough to proof the company able to success in this niche market, after all it is still has left behind. Therefor to catch up the step with other touchscreen pioneer like Samsung and Apple, Nokia has to release more touchscreen device in to the market. And here come this Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, the newest touchscreen device from the company. Apparently with economic pressure of today, Nokia has make the phone affordable and of cause it is in mid-range niche.

Design

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic’s design is a lot like it relative – the Nokia 5800. However, the size of 5530 is come with smaller size that measure at   104mm x 49mm wide and 13mm thick. On the front dominated by the 2.9 inch TFT resistive touch screen. The displays has a quite decent quality images, with  good brightness and sharpness. There are a menu button and a media button located at the top of the screen which calls up elements of the phone like pictures, video and music on a drop-down menu.  And at the bottom you will see the call, end and a xpressmusic buttons. All these keys are touch sensitive. Overall, the design of 5530 is better than 5800 although 5530 has a smaller display. But the reduced of size make it more handy and pocket friendly.

Camera

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic camera is 3.15 mega pixels and has an operating resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. The camera is come with autofocus and LED flash as well as features variety range of scene modes and colour balances and so on to play with. A useful photo editor is also included within the package to allow editing on the fly. The camera is nothing overly special, but by the same token it works pretty well. Video record at 176×220 pixels (QCIF) and up to 15fps. Frankly it is not a good camcorder, 15fps is now not up to the standard for a multimedia phone.

Music and Video

Music is the best part of in Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. It comes with a top quality integrated music player that multiple digital music formats like  WAV, WMA, AAC and eAAC+. You can  sort tracks by artist, genre, album and so on, and see the artwork for said song when playing it back. The player also work in the background so you can do other things like texting and gaming while listen to the music. There is a 3.5mm headset jack situated at the bottom and it work very nicely with the included headset. A Stereo FM radio with RDS also included in this phone. The music quality is excellent,  enough to replace your mp3 player.

Video can be played in WMV/RV/MP4/3GP format. However, if compare with music playback, the video playback is not up to that standard. The 2.9-inch screen is watchable though, but for MP4 and 3GP format file, the screen display limit of around 300×212 pixels video only. What a shame for a multimedia phone.

OS, User Interface and Connectivities

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is sporting the Symbian S60 5th edition interface, which is same as in the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The OS is able to install third party applications  that offer for the open platform. There’s a stylus included with the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic as well that locked into the left hand side of the phone. That’s mean the phone support Handwriting recognition features.  The interface is no much different than in 5800, the same Media Bar accessible by tapping on the top right corner of the device. However there is a upgraded Contacts Bar that now houses up to 20 favorite contacts, lined up horizontally for you to scroll across the screen.  For connectivties, 5530 is less feature packed than its 5800 XpressMusic. The phone is not support HSDPA and GPS , making it can’t connect to 3G fast downloading speed and navigation feature.  That’s why the  5530 XpressMusic is come with lower price tag.

Final Words

Since there already have Nokia 5800 XpressMusic on the market, Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is not the best choice anymore. In fact, we kinda think that the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is the downgraded version of  Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. It is not mean Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is a lousy phone but it is so much similar with Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, we can’t stop to compare with its cousin. However, if you can’t afford 5800 XpressMusic, than Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is a very good alternative.
