Nokia 6710 Navigator Review

On August - 20 - 2009

Nokia recently has added another smartphone in their Navigator lineup – The Nokia 6710 Navigator. This time Nokia has improved the Maps that come with the device. Apart of that, Nokia enhanced updated the inner of phones such as better screen,  5MP camera, faster data, faster processing, updated interface and etc…making it more to be just a navigation device. So let take a look what’s lies beneath this phone.

Design

Actually there are no different design for the new Nokia 6710 Navigator with it predecessor, 6210 Navigator. They both weigh the same, 117g, and the dimensions are almost identical too. However, at first glance you will notice there is a significant changes on the D-pad. Yes, it is smaller in 6710 but have a confirmation knob on it.  Also, there is a Touch-sensitive zoom bar below the screen, that for fluid zoom in/out action in Maps, as well as gallery and web browser. The screen also has upgraded to QVGA TFT display with 2.6″ 16 million colors screen which is bigger and better than the Nokia 6210 Navigator. Sliding down, you will see the standard 12 key alphanumeric keypad, with all keys well sized and easy to select. Nokia offer this phone in two colors – Chestnut Brown and Titanium. There are not our favorite colors, but despite that the phone still has a good ergonomics and sliding mechanisms.

Navigation

As the name suggested, the Nokia 6710 Navigator comes complete with a built-in GPS receiver, A-GPS and Ovi Maps preinstalled. The Maps is version 3.0 which supports a drive, walk and traffic function. The app has very decent looks and easily customizable route planning algorithms. The 3D view mode is brilliant but have to set it ON every time you restart Maps. Also you can load the map content in advance, so you don’t need to access the wireless network to download that on the go. Since it is running Symbian OS, so it support 3rd party application. That’s mean device will also work with other Navigation/Maps software. If you want to save money, than Google Maps works particularly well on the device. There is also a digital compass which helps with understanding the direction you are moving in. It can work with or without the maps.

Camera

Camera also upgraded from the past. In Nokia 6710 Navigator there is a 5.0 megapixel camera, which supports autofocus, and has an LED flash along with Carl Zeiss lens. Notice that there are no lens protection or cover, you are easy to leave your finger smudges on the lens. The camera allows to take pictures up to a maximum image resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels. The image quality overall is very good, though it is still not up to high-end camera standard. But for a navigation device, it is fairly good. The camera also offering  VGA video capture at 15(640 x 480) fps and QVGA(320 x 240) at 30/15 fps. Don’t expect too much of the video recording features, for only 15 fps, it won’t replace your camcoder.

Music and Video

For music playback, the is  handset has a built-in media player which is support for MP3, eAAC+ and AAC music files. Basic options are available such as sorting your songs by artist, album, genre and composer, but you can searching tracks by gradual typing of the desired name is also available. Also, you can use you voice to select the song via the Say and Play features by using the phone’s built-in speaker independent voice recognition. However, the Say and Play feature currently only supports English and the pre-installed UI languages. Don’t forget to use the touch-sensitive bar too. It is working great on selecting your song, lot easier than using the keys.

FM radio is very basic one in Nokia 6710 Navigator. It is RDS supported. You can automatically scan and save the available stations in your area, through the simple and easy understand interface.

Videos are play in Real Player which is supporting  AVC, .wmv and mp4-SP format. It can be played in Landscape mode. However, DivX/XviD is not supported, so you will need a third part application to watch it.

Connectivities

Nokia 6710 Navigator support all-round of connectivities. Despite the common connection like GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth, USB and HSCSD, the phone also support WiFi as well. For 3G connection, either HSDPA, 10.2 Mbps or HSUPA, 2 Mbps are supported by the phone. That’s mean, you can easily get access to the internet wherever you are, through WiFi, 3G, GPRS, HSCSD or EDGE.

Final Words

The Nokia 6710 Navigator is truly a navigation device with the excellent both navigation hardware and software. However, we don’t sure how many people need a serious navigation-centric mobile phone, after all there are a lot of mobile phone out there which are also supporting navigation features though maybe not as brilliant as this one is. But despite of the navigation, the Nokia 6710 Navigator still offer a good variety of features which is enough to be an overwhelming decent smartphone.

I would really buy Nokia 6710 Navigator cell phone because it’s the first mobile to embed Nokia Maps in its latest version (3.0), this Symbian S60 phone has all the advantages of high-end models of the manufacturer (N-series and E-series), but also a fascinating connection, including a standard headphone jack (3.5 mm) and a MicroSD card slot, easily accessible on the left side of the device. Bluetooth and USB 2.0, this phone also has Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g. Beyond its navigation capabilities, the 6710 Navigator will be no substitute for a complex audio player, an FM radio or a camera. The cell phone integrates a 5-megapixel sensor that allows for photos quite decent, even excellent in good lighting conditions.
