Nokia 6760 Slide Review

On November - 2 - 2009

Originally it is Nokia Surge that for AT&T in US. However when its is come to Europe and Asia it become Nokia 6760 slide. It is rarely seen Nokia making a side-slide Qwerty keypad on its phone. But the booming of social networking site nowadays, Qwerty keypad is not only for business purpose only, thus Nokia have to taking part in this niche. After all, it already left behind in this market.

Design

The design of Nokia 6760 Slide is the most eye-catching part of the phone. It is too easy to recognized. There are probably has nothing similar design of this phone on the market. On the front panel, there is a 2.4 inches display that sports QVGA resolution and supports 16mln colors. Nothing to special about the screen, it is only a regular screen that we seen on many mid-range phones. The buttons and D-pad under the screen is a typical Nokia type, a D-pad that have two soft keys, Call and End keys around it. However at the left bottom side, you will also see three more shortcut keys such as Menu and E-mail shortcut key. These three shortcut keys is used when the side Qwerty keypad slided out. The Qwerty keypad has a big buttons that well organised on it. keyboard is comfy and free-trouble to press. Overall the size of Nokia 6760 Slide measures 98 x 58 x 16 mm while weighting 124g. It is not a small device, in fact it is large and thick make it feel bulky. Though the whole phone is made pleasing to touch, but somehow the material doesn’t make it solid and reliable. It feel more like a toy than a smartphone.

Features

The Nokia 6760 slide is running on Symbian S60 3rd Edition, which is not the latest version but still can get some smartphone features in this phone.  Since it is a social network friendly handset, you have a quick access to social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter features. And the Qwerty keypad also made good use in emailing, so the email capabilities in this phone are also enhanced. It offers an automated email setup for popular service providers such as  Ovi Mail, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Windows Live Hotmail or other email providers. What’s more the Push email is also available, which can be useful if you want to manage more than one email account from your mobile phone.

Apart of the texting capabilities, the Nokia 6760 Slide also come with built-in GPS and Ovi Maps version 3. The latter one has been applied in the Nokia 6710 Navigator. So it is reliable navigation software. More info about Ovi Maps version 3 can be found on Nokia 6710 Navigator review.

The handset allows user to have music player that supports many formats of music including MP3, AAC, AAC+, AMR WB, WMA, RealAudio & WAV formats. You listen music from 3D stereo speakers for loud listening experience. The quality is passable but it is better through the boxed headset. The video player in the handset is support most of the video format that including MPEG4, H264, H263, RealVideo & WMV format. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support DivX and XviD video.

The camera in 6760 Slide is somewhere disappointing. Its armed with a 3.15 Mega Pixel camera of 2048×1536 resolution that without autofocus and flash. So you can expect the image quality is low, not to mention the video capture feature is low at only 15 frames per second. The front-facing camera for video-calling, smile detection, Face detection also absence in this phone. What a shame. However, compare with it original Surge, the 6760 Slide has a higher 3.2 megapixel camera instead of a 2.0 megapixel camera, though it is pointless for such a low spec camera.

Conclusion

The Nokia 6760 Slide no doubt is a excellent text messaging, chat and social networking device. But as a smartphone, its lack of many dedicated applications that make it more useful like lack of Wi-Fi. What’s more, the multimedia qualities are also far from perfect. Despite these disadvantages, the appearance of the device is also very wierd, not that will welcomed by most of people. It seem the 6760 Slide is not a device where youngster will like. But if you are a texting addict, sure this phone can be your choice.
