Here comes another premium mobile phone from Nokia Arte range– Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte, released recently. This is the third Nokia handset that from the luxury line. If you go through the specs of this phone you will found that the Nokia 8800 offers nothing advanced, seems like not deserved for the price tag of $1600/1100 Euro. However, the design really helps in constructing the ‘high class’ image for the phone. Obviously the targeted market is only for small bunch of people.
Design
Just as the name mentions, the Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte body is mainly made by carbon fiber and mix with titanium, polished glass and stainless steel. When these materials apply in a clear stylish design, it makes 8800 like a ‘BMW’ in the phones. With the weight of 150g, the Nokia 8800 hardly categorized as a light-weight phone. It is reasonable because we can’t expect the high-quality materials such as stainless steel and glass to be light-weight.
There is the 2” OLED display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and 16 million colors lies on the front. The display is a disappointment, not only it is small, but also poor sunlight legibility. Tapping twice on the lower part of the device, will bring the analog or digital clock up. Below the display are the D-pad and 4 control keys like soft key, Call and End key. And the keypad is hidden under a cover and need you to slide it down to see it. The sliding mechanism is very good, so you can easily to side the cover.
The ergonomic of the phone is perfect, it is feels wonderful in the hand. If you tapping twice on the lower part of the device, an analog or digital clock will display on the phone screen. It is a convenient solution of checking time without unlocks the keypad.
Overall the design of the phone is great. Nokia seems has put hard work into the design since it is the selling point of Nokia 8800.
Features
In term of functionalities, Nokia 8800 Arte really have much to talk about. The phone features no other then other midrange phone. Phone geeks will disappointed of the features that offers by this phone.
The phone only support tri-band network. So some country is out of it list. Although it is a 3G phone, but lack of video call functionalities also make it down. The web browser also is a disappointment because it is fails to visualize complex pages correctly. Due to these weak internet usages, the 3G support is pointless.
The camera in the phone is equipped with 3-megapixel camera with autofocus, but no flash. he images are better than average, but cannot be compared with the top cameraphones from the last generation, which had the same resolution. And since it is no flash, it is pointless to try snapping pictures in a dark environment.
The player works with MP3, MIDI, AAC, AAC+, and WMA formats and it’s really dose the job. Unfortunately there is no FM radio on Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte, what a shame. There is also a video player that compatible with 3GP and MP4 formats. Video can be played in fullscreen mode, as well as fast-forwarded or rewound. With the inbuilt 4 GB memory storage, you can still manage to store a lot of music files.
Conclusion
The Nokia 8800 Arte really isn’t for everyone. The feature of this phone is under some midrange phone. It is good for someone who wants to show his/her class and prosperity. But if you like to look for more functional phone, please don’t look at this phone.
