As you might have expected from its name, the Nokia N97 mini is a smaller version of the N97. It is no doubt that the original N97 is a powerful device, but it seem a little bit bulky. Therefor, Nokia has launched the size reduced version of N97, in not more than 5 or 6 months. Is it only the size that matter? What about with the internal features? Let’s check it out…
Design
As we can see, the Nokia N97 mini still remains the same form-factor but with the size of 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9 mm, and weight of 150 g. That’s mean the N97 mini is more compact and lighter ( 12 gram has been cut off). As it is smaller size, the screen also reduced to 3.2 inches from 3.5 inches, but the resolution still is the same 360 x 640 pixels. Also on the Qwerty keypad, you will found that the D-pad is no more there. We can’t found any different performance on the display, it is still the original quality: sensitive resistive touchscreen and great sunlight legibility. The keypad by the way, the lost D-pad on the left side is replaced by four arrow keys on the right. This might be problem for some users, but for us is not. We still think it is okay with the arrow keys since it is the touchscreen phone. The keys are a bit smaller than on the original N97, but it is still very easy to press. On the back is where you will find the 5-megapixel camera with an LED for lighting up dark subjects. Unlike the N97, there’s no cover to protect the lens. Overall, the Nokia N97 mini is quite a compact smartphone considering it hides a QWERTY keyboard and we like this smaller version size than it predecessor. After all, the smaller the easier for us to carry.
Features
The Nokia N97 mini is running the same Symbian S60 5th edition as in it elder brother. Practically there are not much different, but the N97 mini has sports new homescreen widgets and a host of other minor tweaks and improvements. The homescreen, is now can be add widgets. It can have up to 5 widgets at a time displayed on the homescreen and can be arranged according to which you use most. Besides, this is first time Nokia put Lifecasting feature in this device which is enables users to update their Facebook status directly from the device’s homescreen. The scrolling also has been changed to something called flick scrolling which is using kinetic scrolling technique to function. This is a good improvement because it is indeed smoother than it predecessor.
The memory of the phone also has changed in Nokia N97 mini. It only spot 8GB of internal storage thas is quite a bit less than the 32GB available in the N97. Well, it is not a big deal, 8G is enough for us. But if you don’t think so, you can still adding the memory through the microSD card slot.
Other features in 97 mini still remains the same, nothing worth to mentions as they are already has been reviewed in Nokia N97.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, there are not much different in Nokia N97 mini than it predecessor. If the size really matter to you, than it is a good choice. Oh yes… there is one more think forget to say, the price of Nokia N97 mini is cheaper than N97 about £80-£100 (it is vary with region). The price has to put in consideration too. So the bigger the screen the more it cost.
