Although the concept of solar powered phone is not something new an even few phone maker has announced their solar powered device. In this point, Samsung had launched the Samsung E1107 which is going to be the first commercially available solar powered phone. The Samsung E1107, known as Solar Guru or Crest Solar depending on region.

Design

With the 16mm in dept, the Samsung E1107 obviously is not a slim device. This is due to the solar panel on the rear panel that adds a little to the thickness of the handset. However, with the weight of only 77 grams makes it very lightweight and easy to tote around. Other features are pretty basic of this low-end candy bar phone. Up front, there is a 1.52-inch CSTN display with a 128 x 128 pixel resolution with 65k colors. Below it is the five way navigation pad and with End, call and Soft keys around it. The keypad’s buttons is very large and well spaced out make it easy for typing even for elderly.  Moreover, there is a small LED is placed on top for use as a torch. Overall, all the design are really simple and look exactly like the existing Samsung E1100.

Solar Power

Here is the selling point, the solar power. The solar energy that converted to Samsung E1107 seems to not so much. Because every hour of solar charging will offer you 5-10 minutes of talk time.  That is not much, but would enough for you to call for help when u lost in a desert of jungle. Also, for area don’t have easy access to electricity such as developing countries who have limited access to mains power, this phone is practically useful. Of course, there is also an AC Adapter for you to charge the phone, just in case there is no sun for a few days like you going to North or South pole.

Features

Although the Samsung E1107 is a low end phone, it is still features Mp3 Ringtones, FM Radio, Game, Mobile Tracker function and Fake Call function, which might help some users get out of an undesired situation. Besides the cost that matter, the another reason to keep this phone as simple as possible is to lower the power drain. All these fancy features need a lot of power.

Conclusion

We have to admit that Samsung E1107 Crest Solar has a very weak features, though the solar power part is really great idea. Most of the people will not like this phone. But if you like wild life and spent a lot of your time out door, this phone is a good choice for you, even just to be a backup phone.
