The Samsung i8510 INNOV8 is proudly to be the first phone that comes with 8MG camera in the market. Despite the high resolution of camera, the Samsung i8510 INNOV8 16G internal memory is also enough to stand out from the crowd.
Design
The INNOV8’s slider form measures 106×54mm with a 17mm depth and offer a 16 million color QVGA resolution screen over a 2.8-inch viewing space. This is not a slim, compact phone. In fact, the phone is really big when the slider is open. The body was covered by combination of metal and plastic which make the phone look very solid. The keypad is in flat design but it is easy to press. There is video calls camera and an ambient light sensor for automatic screen brightness adjustment placed above the screen. And the ultimate 8MP camera is lies on the back of the phone. The D-pad that below the display is implementing optical touch pad as the navigation controller. By sweeping your thumb across the touchpad, you can move your selection around screen. However, if you wish not to use the touch pad you can turn off the touch pad functionality under the touchpad. On the left side of the Samsung i8510 INNOV8 is the 3.5mm audio jack, which are the TV-out port and the volume rocker. Notice also there is a standard microUSB port beside the the jack.
The design of INNOV8 is pretty good. The phone is look like a touch screen smart phone rather then a slider phone. But maybe the slider is design to differentiate the phone and the touchscreen Samsung Omnia.
Camera
Now let see what lies beneath this 8MP camera is. The camera module and flash are mounted toward the top of the Samsung i8510, while the shutter key is placed near the bottom, meaning that you won’t cover the lens with fingers or palm when shooting. The LED flash would be a shame of this 8MP camera. We all prefer the camera is come with more powerful Xenon flash.
The camera software is including smile-detection auto focus, auto panorama, image stabiliser and 30 frames-per-second VGA resolution video recording. Thus you can play around with the function you need. The image quality is remaining its Samsung standard, which is very decent. Just like we expected, the 8MP help in improve the quality of the image.
In terms of video, the i8510 INNOV8 is no different from the Samsung G600 – it allows recording video in VGA at 30 FPS and QVGA at up to 120 FPS. You can also zoom in and out when capturing video. The i8510 currently produces MP4 files that have audio/video sync problems (a fraction of a second lag) and which won’t (by default) play at some of the MP4 world, Quicktime Pro – you have to manually rename the files to end in ‘.3gp’ to get it to work. It’s seems the camera is use to capture image rather then record video.
Music&Video
The Samsung i8510 INNOV8 has the regular Symbian music player. You can sort tracks by by artist, album, genre and composer and searching tracks by gradual typing is also available. There’s also an FM radio with RDS support. The INNOV8 can record radio broadcast too. Nothing much to say about the music quality of this phone, it’s not bad but still can’t compare with those music phone out there. After all, the phone is targeting the photograph lover more rather then music lover.
Speaking to the video player, It’s said to be able to play a really wide range of video formats among which even DivX (On the Samsung i8510’s back cover sits a ‘DivX’ logo). But I doubt it, I tried side-loading on some old QVGA DivX shor clips, but RealPlayer refused to play them. Maybe the variation in DivX codec versions is the issue. The videos play is in landscape mode by default, and it is not changeable. I bet some people will hate this setting. By the way a video editor is also available as a separate application that allows you not only to actually edit videos but also create videos out of still images (video slideshows).
Memory
The Samsung INNOV8 will have two variants – 8GB and 16GB. But the phone also support up to 8G microSD (TransFlash) memory card. So the memory capacity won’t be the big problem for most user.
GPS navigation
The Samsung INNOV8 has a built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS support. The GPS Data application gives you raw satellite data such as coordinates, time, latitude, etc. Google Maps is comes pre-installed on the INNOV8 so you won’t have to pay for it.
Internet
Browsing the internet on a Samsung INNOV8 is a pleasure. The web page content manages to fits perfectly on screen and looks exactly like on a PC. And with the optical touchpad in combination with the web browser virtual mouse cursor (not visisble on the screenshots) really takes browsing a level up. The touchpad allows you to control the mouse pointer just as on the desktop. And scrolling the pointer to any of the borders of the visible window makes the webpage pans in that direction. Also, there is flash support but you can turn that off if you like.
To connect to the internet is no difficulty to INNOV8. You either can use GPRS, 3G or even WLAN to connect to the internet. Samsung has done a great job in the Internet capabilities.
Conclusion
We are really impressed by Samsung INNOV8. The camera really done the job as it’s promising. Although the LED flash is the downside of the camera, but it’s still is the best phone’s camera so far. The features of the phone are quite comprehensive. It got what it takes to become a decent smartphone.
Thumbs up to Samsung INNOV8.
