This month, the hottest event in mobile phone industry definitely belongs to the official released of iphone 3G by Apple. I am sure that none of you will miss this news because it has been reported in most of the media all around the world. I think this is never happened to other phone where can attract so much concern from the world in their first released. Iphone no doubt is a great phone, but in the meantime we also don’t forget other phone manufacturers also have their own excellent phones open to the market. And some of them could be the great competitor for iphone. Samsung i900 Omnia is one of them.
The first impression of Samsung i900 Omnia to me is the phone is look so similar to iphone. The both are touch screen on the front and in same shape. But for anyone that familiar with Samsung or iphone, they still can recognize the different between them. (Ok, I confess that I am not a iphone fans, so far). The design of Omnia actually is simple. The front is a 3.2″ touchscreen that supports resolution of 240 x 400 pixels (WQVGA). Below the screen are the ‘end’ and ‘call’ button, and in the middle of these two buttons is an optical directional pad which can depressed to select item. At top of the back is the lens for the 5MP camera and the rest is the cover of the battery. Overall the design of Omnia is very solid feel and feel comfortable when hold in hand.
Although Samsung i900 Omnia is mainly using touchscreen to control the phone, but the phone is not come without stylus. You just need you thumbs or fingertips to press on the screen and of course the touch screen have the haptics feedback function which make you feel like touch on the real buttons. Beside the screen also come with accelerometer which is for switching the screen between landscape and portrait modes. It is mainly used for picture capturing. Talk about capturing image, you won’t de disappointed by Omnia because the 5MP camera is pretty responsive. It comes with excellent features such as autofocus, the use of an LED for night shots and anti-shake. The LED can even be turned on independently of the camera for use as a flashlight. And we are happy that the Omnia can offer good image quality
One of the important feature of Samsung i900 Omnia is the phone is using Windows MObile 6.1, as it interface. So you will found of full set of windows pc applications. This includes Windows Mobile Processional typical applications like Office Mobile (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote) as well as Outlook Mobile, Internet Explorer Mobile, Windows Media Player Mobile, File Explorer, etc. However, beside of that Omnia also provides other great feature like Opera Mobile 9.5, ShoZu, a RSS reader and Podcast fetcher as well as a business card scanner software, a FM radio interface built-in GPS receiver (support Google Maps) and more. And to connect to the internet, the phone is support high speed HSDPA up to 7.2 Mbps and Wi-Fi,. All these features are very useful for businessmen that travel around the world.
In term of multimedia features, Samsung i900 Omnia not only can play variety of format multimedia files (audio: MP3/AAC/AAC+/WMA/OGG/AMR player, video: DivX/XviD/WMV/MP4 player), it also includes a TV Out functions that allows you to watch DiVX movies on TV screens. And what more important is the sound and video worked fine in the phone. There is no problem for you to store bunch of music and video files in this phone because its external memory can support up to 16G memory stick.
As you can see Samsung i900 Omnia has everything packed in one single smart device. Someone has even said that Omnia going to be the killer for iphone. Well, I don’t think that will happened, since Omnia is lot more expensive then iphone 3G ( Omnia is about $500-$1000++, iphone 3G is from $199-$400), but at least don’t take iphone 3G as your only choice.
