Samsung Corby S3650, the latest budget touchscreen device in their line-up, is targeting  teenage consumer base who likes to customize it to their requirements and the price justifies every embedded feature. The attractive curves, contours and bright-colored interchangeable rear covers of Samsung S3650 Corby is in sync with today’s lifestyle and the demands of the young generation. And the easy access social network capabilities is another selling point of the phone for the youngsters.

Design

The Samsung Corby S3650 has an attractive curves and contours design. Along with the colorful and interchangeable back covers make it sync with today’s lifestyle and the demands of the young generation. Most of the front is occupied by the 2.8″ touch sensitive display that has a 240 x 320 pixel resolution. The image quality is mediocre, just fit the standard of the phone. The sunlight legibility is also poor, unfortunately. Below the display, you will see the menu and the call and end buttons. The casing of the device is made entirely out of glossy plastic, that will lead to to fingerprint-magnet, though it is built sturdyly. The Samsung Corby has a quite good ergonomic and it is feel very comfortable hold in hand and even easily fit into your pocket.

User Interface

Although the Samsung Corby is an entry-level phone, but Samsung still offering TouchWiz interface in the device. There are three homescreens which you can fill up with widgets and each homescreen selected through by swiping your finger across the display. One notable feature found in the S3650 is Smart unlock feature (previously known as Gesture lock) which is allows users to simultaneously unlock the phone and open a menu item, application – even dial a contact – just by drawing a letter on the unlock screen.

Social Networking

Speaking with the social networking capability, Samsung Corby just provide several links to websites such as such as Facebook, Picasa and Flickr and the ability to directly upload files. I don’t think this is friendly enough because what we prefer is the abilities to status update and pop up social networking notifications feature, but it lacked here. However, there are easier login setup in the phone, so you don’t have to login each time you access those websites.

Music and Video

The music player in Samsung S3650 Corby is typical latest-gen Samsung player that you will found on the Samsung Jet and Star.  It can play MP3, WMA, AAC and eAAC+ music files and  filtering tracks by author, album, genre and even create own custom playlists.  The player also supports random, sequential and cyclic playback and able to minimized to play in the background. Aside from being able to set play, stop, next and previous, you can fast forward and rewind the playing song too. Besides of playing music file, there is also a FM radio with RDS come with the phone. All these feature make the music player can compete with portable mp3 player. However, If you listen the music through speakerphone, you probably will disappointed with the quality – you maybe hear the distorted or lacked power sound. To fix this problem, you will need a headset.

As for the video player, the only basic feature has included. It support H.263, H.264 and MP4 codecs and the Mp4 video is only managed to get QVGA samples running. The interface is simple and not many features offered. And the screen size is really not the pleasant one to watching video.

Camera

Considering the Samsung Corby is a entry-level phone, so it only manage to spot a 2 mega pixel camera that has record videos capability. The interface is simple and easy to use. Nothing much to say about this camera, just fit the the level of the phone. You shouldn’t expect high on it.

Application

Although Samsung Corby is not a smartphone, but it still allow you to view MS document through an application called Picsel Viewer. Basically it can open MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat (PDF), picture and video formats on the phone. You can zoom in/out and rotate pages but you can’t edit these files. For surfing internet, the device use the new WebKit-based Dolfin web browser. It is full Flash support and has new one-finger zooming algorithm feature. The surf internet experience is pleasant with this browser and is the fitness browser we ever seen on an entry-level phone. Other notable application include Community that for allows setting up an account with one of image-sharing services; Goolge page for quick access to Gmail and Google Maps applications.

Final Words

For a low-end phone, the Samsung Corby S3650 is done more than what we expect. It’s not only feature rich but also have an attractive design. Of course, not everyone will like this phone, but if you need a touchscreen device than Samsung Corby S3650 is worth to considered.
