Sony Ericsson S312 Review

On July - 17 - 2009

Sony Ericsson S312 also known as the Athena is a basic phone that has been released recently. The phone is targeting the mid and low end market, and believe me this niche has a huge potential to success because not everyone need a smartphone or a high end phone for some reason. Although Sony Ericsson S312 is basic, but the company claims that the phone promise to deliver good photo and video to users. Read the full review after the jump.

Design

The phone designed in candy-bar form factor, typically Sony Ericsson style. The display is a 176 x 220 pixels, 2.0 inches, TFT screen that can support up to 256,000 colors. In order to deliver better image, the display was built by Scratch-resistant surface, so there will be no scratching that blur the image.  The Sony Ericsson S312 with measurement of 100 x 46 x 12.5 mm and weighs 80 grams, which is indicating it is a slim and light device.

Camera

As the company announced, the S312 has a better camera features though it is only has 2MP of resolution. It allow capturing pictures up to 1600×1200 pixels and a LED flash for user snapping in the dark. The camera quick launches with a press of the dedicated camera button, which is also the button used for capturing images. The captured images can be uploaded online thanks to the built in photo blogging application. The image quality actually is quite good in it range, not bad for a 2MP camera. If your captured images leave a bit to be desired in the quality department, just run them through the photo fix application. And the images can be print out via PictBridge printing.

The camera is more advance in video recording features. For better controlling the camera, there is a dedicated camera key doubling up for video usage and offer quick access to the most common options, such as turning on the camera light, adjusting the image size and so on at the numeric 3, 6, 9 and # key. This is rarely have been found on other handset, even in smartphone.

The camera indeed is easy to use. Just like its Marketing business manager at Sony Ericsson, Quentin Cordier said  “Capture life’s spontaneous moments the easy way with the S312 and its instant video recording.”

Music

The music player is quite basic type in SE S312. It features stereo widening , Track ID, equalizer option and able to play MP3 and AAC music files. Playnow is available on the handset, which allows you to browse online from a variety of media that you can download directly from the Sony Ericsson site. Beside that, the phones also supports FM radio with RDS.

Conclusion

For being in a basic capability phone , extra features such as 3G or HSDPA are not included. However, it is not something necessary. Apart of that, the Sony Ericsson S312 is a very decent basic multimedia phone. The ease of image capture and multimedia sharing is ideal for those not-so-technically savvy user.
