If you think the Sony Ericsson W902 is just another music phone in SE Walkman series, then you are wrong. Yes, the ‘W’ in the Sony Ericsson W902 is already indicated that the phone is from Walkman’s line, but 5MP camera in the phone make it stand out from the other Walkman’s phone. It smells like the Sony Ericsson W902 is in C series, which more dedicated to camera functionalities. But Sony Ericsson W902 is not C series. In fact, the phone is just like the combination of SE W and C series, which can provide both very good music and photography experiences.
Design
The Sony Ericsson W902 is traditional candy bar style handset. The screen at the top is 2.2inches TFT display with the resolution of 240 x 320 pixels, followed by the navigation pad and the numeric keypad is at the bottom. The keypad backlight is of a white color and will switch to red when the player is launched. Measuring at 110 x 49 x 11.7 mm 99.8 g, the W902 is comfortable hold in hand and no problem to put in pocket. Overall, the phone is beautiful and solid but not surprising. I think SE phone pattern strength is in slider phone, just in my own opinion.
Memory
As a multimedia phone, the memory storage is very important. You will not want a very good music phone but only can store ten songs. That is no meaning for doing that. So in Sony Ericsson W902 memory capacity is not a problem. The 25MB memory onboard is included which to be honest is slightly puzzling. But if you think the W902 might have fallen short before it even really got started, fear not as it supports up to 8GB expandable memory and the W902 will come bundled with an 8GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card.
Camera
The camera in Sony Ericsson W902 is the surprise. It is a 5 MP cemera with the resolution up to 2592 x 1944 pixels. It can do autofocus and flash. And the video recording can record up to QVGA 30fps. There are four shooting modes available: Normal, Landscape, Frame and BestPic (the latter is a variation of the more common serial shot function). Also, the available geo-tagging option is letting you tag your photos with a location ID.
There is the reason why SE tags this phone as music phone instead a camera phone that in C series. Because the camera is lack of some features to become a real camera phone such as no specialized lens guard, like the one in Sony Ericsson C902. However, this does not stop W902 to capture a good quality image. The quality of shots stays on a level with C902. I think normally people won’t care so much whether the phone is a real camera phone or not as long as the quality of the image is good. But for those photography lovers, this tiny difference could affect their decision.
Music
We are not surprise by the excellent music quality of Sony Ericsson W902. But W902 will set it apart from other music phone with the Sony Ericsson premium headphones, HPM-77 that included in-box. And when paired with the premium in-ear headphones, your favorite tracks will sound better than ever. The Sony Ericsson W902 features the same superior sound quality as the W980.
Other music features in W902 include the Shake Controls found on the W910, whereby you can skip tracks by shack the handset from side to side. Apart of that it is also supports Shake Control volume adjustment, which is done by leaning the handset forwards or backwards. The TrackID will lets you record a few seconds of a song and then tells you the artist, album and gives you the option to then download the track. And on top of that, the phone also includes an FM Transmitter, meaning you can play your music through any FM Radio, even your car stereo!
Conclusion
So in closing, the Sony Ericsson W902 is the child of SE W and C series. This hybrid phone really caught the role from it parent. Beside can play the wonderful music and W902 also capturing clear and beautiful image. This handset surely ranks among the most balanced solutions by Sony Ericsson and deserves some real attention.
