Nokia is investigating the possibility of manufacturing cell phones for illiterate people, reports the financial paper Kauppalehti.

“NOKIA is directing more research towards new radio technology, which is expected to expand the mobile phone’s range to all frequencies. Another direction of research is body language. The company is seeking to use that as a basis for more undeveloped markets. Body language would make cell phones available to the illiterate.

One of Nokia Research Center’s (NRC) main research projects can be found amongst new user interfaces. One example of this is a mobile application combining the real and virtual worlds, which utilises image identification and tracking. It would bring phones within the reach of millions of new users. ‘The illiterate cannot write. We need new ways of interaction, for example icon or sign-based interfaces,’ says Henry Tirri, the head of NRC.

Currently, more efficient use of the radio spectrum is another hot subject in the cell phone business discussion.”
